I noticed that the site doesn't use HTTPS. Would it take much effort to make it use HTTPS?

Why? This site is not working with payment info. Or you are afraid of being hacked here?

The "Not secure" message that appears in my Chrome address bar makes me feel uncomfortable.

It's called https everywhere it's made by the electronic frontier foundation and it forces every connection to go over https!

Another reason to use HTTPS is so that chat between members isn't sent in plaintext.

Admin needs to enable HTTPS for security and privacy. Google search results also prioritize encrypted websites which means more people would find this site if it used HTTPS. It doesn’t cost anything to turn on, you can get a free certificate from Let’s Encrypt. It’s all very easy to do:
https://letsencrypt.org/

You can also use this to test a website’s security and get a ranking from A+ to F and it will tell you what to do to improve the score:
